Choosing Between Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

Imagine turning on your AC on a particularly warm day and finding that it is no longer working. This can be a frustrating situation, especially when you’ve been looking forward to cold comfortable air when you get home. If your AC is no longer functioning as it should, you might need to have it replaced.

When you need to replace your air-conditioning unit, you should know that you don’t have to install the same kind of AC in place of the old one. You have quite a few options to pick from, and one such option that you can consider is a heat pump.

Don’t be fooled by the name though. While it does say “heat” in the name, it actually does more than provide heat to a home. A heat pump is a unit that can both heat and cool a home, with the system pulling out either warm air from the outside to heat up the inside of your home or from the inside to cool it down. This means you have a dual system that you can use all year round.

How to Choose Between These Two Options

Choosing between an AC system and a heat pump is actually pretty easy to do. If you don’t have an efficient heating system in your home, and you need a new cooling system at the same time, then a heat pump is a good idea. If you already have an efficient heating system in your home, choosing a heat pump is not really necessary for you.

Another thing you need to consider when you are trying to pick between these two options is if you want a really cold home during the hot summer months of the year. While a heat pump can cool your home considerably, it cannot give you the frigid air that air-conditioners can provide.
