Why Won't My Air Conditioner Turn On

One of the most frustrating and annoying things that can happen to you is when summer arrives is when you turn on your AC on a particularly hot day, only to find that it is not working. While you can contact your favorite AC repairman to come and fix the problem, having an AC not work in 90-degree heat is not something you will want to experience.

Why isn’t your AC working? Here are some of the most common reasons for a failing air conditioner:

  • Dirty and clogged filters – if you neglect to have your AC cleaned on a regular basis, there is a huge chance your AC will breakdown out one of these days. Your AC may run even with dirty filters but you won’t get the cool air you expect if your filters are dirty. A clogged or dirty filter can cause airflow problems, which can result in a damaged AC or one that does not cool your home.
  • Dirty condenser – dirt can also affect your condenser and stop your AC from working properly or working at all. If your AC’s condenser is dirty, it will also cause airflow problems, which will affect how it cools the air your AC sucks to help cool your home and keep you comfortable.
  • The thermostat is not working properly – your thermostat can also be the reason why your AC is not working. If it is battery operated, check the batteries and change them if they are out of power. If it is wired, make sure that it is connected to your power source and that the wires are intact. You should also make sure that it is set to cool, and the temperature is at a few degrees lower than the current room temperature.
  • The circuit breaker tripped– check your circuit breaker to see if the switch for your AC tripped or not. If it has tripped, reset the circuit breaker and try running your AC again. If it trips again, there may be a problem that needs to be addressed by an AC technician before you can safely run your air conditioner.

To ensure that you don’t experience any of these AC problems in your home, it is a good idea to have your air conditioning system on a consistent maintenance schedule.
